Employment market continues to tighten in 2022

EnergeiaWorks has set a new company quarterly revenue record as the employment market continues to tighten in 2022. While I am happy with this achievement, I can't help but dwell on the rising costs and limited availability of talent acquisition in our industry. This is what keeps me up at night. If you're hiring in renewable energy right now, you should be losing sleep over it as well!

The Great Resignation coupled with a skyrocketing Consumer Price Index is not a good recipe for positive change in the employment market. Even if the Federal Reserve raises the Interest Rate during the next policy meeting (scheduled for May), it may take an extended period for a market correction. There's an over-demand for talent in clean energy and limited supply, so I fear we may be in this employment cycle through the remainder of 2022 and very likely into 2023. Human capital supply chain problems are with us to stay.

So, what are you doing about it?

For one, join me at the Midwest Solar Expo in June as I host a fireside chat titled Talent No-Show! I'll help guide employers through my experience in hiring solutions over my 22-year career as an executive recruiter and help them weather The Great Resignation storm that's in front of us.

Think like a Marine! When I was 18 years old, I enlisted and learned an invaluable lesson, one that is an unofficial mantra of the US Marine Corps. Adapt and overcome! And, yes, Clint Eastwood also quoted this in Heartbreak Ridge :) If employers don't adapt and overcome in this employment market, they will be left behind by their competitors who have adapted. Our Director of Recruitment Monica Scantlen joined LinkedIn's Forward Webinar with global leaders in talent acquisition this week. The number one takeaway? People before profit. The active jobseeker in 2022 cares about how they work, why they work, and where they work. Stop saying and start doing! To be a competitive employer in this market and beyond, you better have the answers to these questions. You should be able to clearly articulate your organization's vision, purpose, and mission. What else does the modern employee want in their workplace? They will be invested in DEIJ policy and initiatives. In the United States, February is Black History Month followed by Women's History Month in March. It's a great time of year to prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) so that these principles become embedded within your work. If you're an employer, it's crucial to examine your organization's advancement of DEIJ. If you're an employee, it's important to make certain you are working for an employer who's pushing DEIJ initiatives forward.

At EnergeiaWorks we have been building a diverse team in the US and Canada and providing equitable compensation across positions. We're beginning the DEIJ Certification process with SEIA to make certain we're leaders in best practices as an employer, and we're helping our customers discuss and develop these initiatives in their own organizations.

As an industry, I feel that renewable energy is more progressive than many others in North America, but, of course, there's always room for improvement. EnergeiaWorks Director of Customer Success Victoria Waye will be addressing DEIJ in our field during a panel at the Midwest Solar Expo. And in March, EnergeiaWorks brought in two experts for a Lunch & Learn dedicated to this topic, as detailed below by Jamie Paquette, Operations Director.
